The Gift of a Good Love Story

With Valentine's Day around the corner and the state of the world the way it is at the moment, we cannot emphasise the importance of taking time out to relax, unwind, and remind ourselves that love, care, humanity, and all those good things actually do exist.

We've listed below some heart-warming, soul-inspiring reads for Valentine's Day to keep you going.

The Spell of Summer and Summer's End

These two gorgeous reads centre around family, friendships, and a second chance at love. Set along the windswept beaches of Cornwall, these novels are a cross between passionate romance and women's fiction. Remember the idealistic way you looked at the world when young(er) and about to set it ablaze? These stories take you right back to those times, and the characters being in their late twenties doesn't detract from that at all, but does the opposite – it reminds you love (new and lasting) is possible whatever age you are and just as strong as it ever was.

The Witching Pen Series

There's a reason why "the chosen one" trope, like in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, stand the test of time: they make you feel you can take control of your life no matter what fate throws at you; that you do mean something; that the things you do matter. Throw in the special bond of the "found family", demon dimensions, lots of plot twists, action, and romantic involvements, and you have yourself a fun and dynamic series you'll want to come back to again and again, both to help you unwind and to help you change the world for the better.

The Witching Pen Series has that in spades! All four main books are worth reading with book one setting the scene and introducing the main key characters. There's a fair bit of (crazy) romance in these books, but there's also humour and a lot of layered storylines the further into the series you go. It's one you won't forget.

Broken Lights

This would usually be far too gritty a read for us to recommend for Valentine's Day, but given the state of the world, we think it's important to know even the toughest situations can be overcome with the strength we hold inside.

Broken Lights mainly takes place around the Whitechapel area of London (which has its own colourful past). The story is about Norman, your average, non-descript guy who loses everything – his marriage, his job – drowns his sorrows for weeks after, until he finally runs into a woman called Rosa who is "from the wrong side of the tracks". Fascinated by her presence, he feels compelled to do a very un-Norman thing when he finds her cornered in an alleyway by two fairly repulsive men. This leads to something of a life-changing journey for both of them.

As you can imagine, this gritty contemporary romance will contains triggers pertaining to domestic and sexual violence for some readers. But it is very much worth the read to get a glimpse of Norman's and Rosa's revelations by the end of the story.

Happy Anniversary

Okay, this is not so much a "book", but an erotic, short read (fifteen to twenty minutes). It's an erotic contemporary romance "short" written in 2011 when the eBook market and its huge number of erotic romance titles were taking off, but it won some acclaim from bloggers for its spicy, fun approach to reviving a marriage. It's that little reminder that the older we get, love isn't quite enough for everything and we often have to work to make our marriages fun and spontaneous again. There's no plot here, guys, this is just a quickie you can enjoy on your own or with your loved one. (So maybe perfect for Valentine's night itself.)
In eBook format only.

And there we go! Don't let the bad guys get you down – we have each other and we have love absolutely everywhere we look.

Happy reading :)
